It happens in Portugal, the referee awards a penalty to Porto but cancels it after the call on the pitch
The VAR system has greatly reduced the controversy surrounding suspicious cases in football, however there is still controversy over how it works. An unprecedented case happened this week in the Portuguese football championship.
The match between Porto and Arouka lasted more than 110 minutes and the reason for this was the numerous delays. When the score was 0-1, the referee awarded a penalty to Porto but then received the signal from VAR that the decision should be reviewed.
Meanwhile, at the moment when the referee on the field had to communicate with the VAR system, a technical error caused difficulties and for this reason, the referee was offered a mobile phone in order to talk to the VAR room to make a decision .
This action has brought many reactions to the football players on the field who have protested saying that it is not fair and that the result should not be recognized. So, in the last minutes, Porto missed another penalty, but then tied the score at 1-1.
